Welcoming 2020 Research Forum Lead Almudena Escobar López

We are pleased to announce that Almudena Escobar López will be the 2020 Research Forum Lead at the 33rd Images Festival (April 16–22, 2020). During the festival, Almudena will be guiding and facilitating a cohort of six selected Research Forum participants through group discussions and textual reading.

 

Almudena Escobar López is an independent curator, archivist, and researcher from Galicia, Spain.

 

She is the Time-Based Media Curatorial Assistant at the Memorial Art Gallery in Rochester, NY, and is a PhD candidate in Visual and Cultural Studies at the University of Rochester. Her research interests include experimental film and documentary, artistic practices that investigate archives and museums, visual historiography, and post-colonial and anti-ethnographic film.

 

Almudena has curated programs for Cineteca Nacional de México (CDMX), UnionDocs (NYC), Cinema Camp (Lithuania), Baltic Analog Lab (Latvia), The Alternative Film/Video film festival (Serbia), The Florida Experimental Film/Video Festival (FLEX), Vtape (Toronto), and ULTRAcinema (Mexico). She is a member of the collective screening project On-Film and co-curated the 2018 Winter/Spring Flaherty NYC series Common Visions at Anthology Film Archives with Herb Shellenberger.

 

Aside from her curatorial experience, Almudena has contributed criticism to MoMA Magazine, Walden, Vdrome, Vertical Features, MUBI Notebook, The Brooklyn Rail, Afterimage, Film Quarterly, and Desistfilm, among other publications and catalogs. Since 2017, she serves on the Board of Trustees at the Visual Studies Workshop in Rochester, NY; and more recently, she has joined the International Fund Development Team of Media City Film Festival.
