Artistic Director

North America’s largest exhibitor of independent and experimental moving image culture is currently seeking an Artistic Director. The person in this position will work in a collaborative environment to plan and execute a successful 2018 festival involving multiple exhibition sites and events, and public, corporate and community partners. This is a year-round position reporting to the Executive Director. Images is a dynamic workplace and annual forum for excellence and innovation in contemporary media art.

The Images Festival, based in Toronto and in its 30th year, features artist-made Canadian and international film and video and related new, installations and live performances. This 8-day festival combines theatrical screenings with gallery-based media art installations, live performances and special projects. Images also features symposia, artists’ talks, special curated programs, touring programs, year-round programming and publications alongside its annual competition selection of moving image artworks.

Position Summary:

The Artistic Director of the Images Festival will play a pivotal role in the media arts sector in Toronto and beyond. In conjunction with the Programmer, the Artistic Director oversees all aspects of the programming for the Images Festival with the support of other programming and administrative staff.

Responsibilities include:

  • Establishing the overall programming direction for the Images Festival, in conjunction with the Executive Director and Programmer
  • Researching, soliciting and selecting films, videos, curatorial proposals, and related works for presentation at the Images Festival (can include works in performance, installation and new media) in conjunction with the Programmer;
  • Programming for year-round screenings, outreach, special & touring projects in conjunction with the Programmer;
  • Writing & editing curatorial statements, program descriptions, descriptions of individual works in conjunction with the Programmer;
  • Working with exhibition partners, guest curators, programmers, screening committees, awards juries, writers and/or organizations on specific projects, including publications and commissioning projects, where required;
  • Arrange + manage technical and logistical details regarding, equipment, technicians;
  • Manage + coordinate the technical and logistical aspects of ON, OFF, and LIVE programs;
  • Arranging (or supervising the arrangement of) bookings, and acting as a liaison with local, national, and international distributors and with all participating artists, directors, producers, etc.;
  • Arranging rental and negotiating fees with exhibiting artists and/or distributors;
  • Participating in programming related aspects of Images Festival publicity, i.e. conducting interviews with print, television and radio press.
  • Liaising with Festival Guests (artists, programmers, journalists, funders) to ensure their comfort and support while attending the festival, making introductions and providing support for social events and networking opportunities.

Working in conjunction with programming support staff to:

  • Coordinate print traffic prior to and during the Images Festival;
  • Manage catalogue deadlines for programming text and content;
  • Arrange hospitality, travel, accommodation, and support for guests of the festival;
  • Ensure coordination of installations component with other Festival programming

Working in conjunction with the Executive Director to:

  • Develop and work within an overall established programming goals, budget + timeline, develop budgets and timelines on any programming projects, and effectively manage expenses and revenues on budget related to all festival programming;
  • Select the appropriate Images Festival venue/s and technical support;
  • Prepare and submit grant requests and grant reports as related to programming;
  • Manage the tasks and timeline of programming team, in relation to general festival timelines (Marketing/PR, Print Production, Guest Services, Education)
  • Participate in festival and year-round marketing strategy and timeline (in conjunction ED, staff + publicist).
  • Develop sponsor and fundraising opportunities for aspects of fund development related to Images Festival programming, special initiatives etc. as early as reasonably possible in order to facilitate specific fundraising initiative/s;
  • Provide general assistance where required.

Working in conjunction with Operations Manager:

  • Work with the Operations Manager and Print Production Coordinator to coordinate programming and related aspects of catalogue production including gathering stills, texts and other relevant marketing materials;
  • Work with Publicist to develop publicity plan + PR materials (press releases);service media requests for materials.
  • Communicate specific programming needs for volunteer, front of house, box office coordinators/assistants, and events to Operations Manager
  • Develop presentation strategies for promotional materials, including the Images Festival catalogue, posters, etc.;
  • Arrange and manage details regarding presentation venues.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 5-years experience programming and/or curating contemporary moving image arts;
  • Knowledge of the local, national and international media arts communities and the not-for-profit arts sector;
  • Experience with critical arts writing, publishing and related fields;
  • Strong technical skills in digital arts equipment, electronics, and sound equipment;
  • Detail oriented with an ability to multitask and meet often-overlapping deadlines;
  • Demonstrated budget creation and monitoring skills;
  • Well organized, self motivated, strong communication skills working in a team environment;
  • Comfortable in a Mac-based environment (experience with Adobe Creative Suite, websites and OS X server are considered strong assets);
  • Fluency in both official languages is considered an asset.

Salary and benefits

  • This is a salaried year-round full time position with a combination 4 and 5 days per week;
  • Salary range is subject to confirmation of hours and commensurate with experience;
  • Supplementary health benefits
  • 2 weeks vacation, plus 2 weeks paid each holiday closure and summer closure

Volunteer
The Images Festival is the largest festival in North America for experimental and independent moving image culture, showcasing the innovative edge of international contemporary media art both on and off the screen. It is intrinsically linked to the promotion and survival of independent media art within Canada and internationally. 

Like many non-profit organizations, we absolutely depend on the support of volunteers. As well as being fun, volunteering can provide you with valuable experience and an opportunity to meet key people in the arts. We will be looking for volunteers to help with any of the following:

  • Administrative, promotional and development tasks in the office before and during the festival
  • Distributing posters and catalogues downtown
  • Assisting artists with installing and de-installing gallery shows (throughout March and April)
  • Box Office and merchandise sales
  • Ushers and ticket takers for screenings and live events
  • Decorating, bartending and hosting for parties and receptions
